Vision

We hear a lot about vision. From politicians to corporations, there is a lot of effort to invite us into their vision for the world. Selling a vision is why billions are spent on marketing and advertising. Having a vision is important. Proverb 29:18(KJV) states: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” The ability to see the world and imagine possibilities that can transform our society is a gift from God that opens us to the movement of the Holy Spirit so that we can dream dreams and see visions.

Over the last few months, I have been learning more about Hillspring and the Tri-Cities area. I have asked countless times, “What is your vision for our community?”. It is a great question, which at its best is rooted in another question, “What are we going to do?”. Visioning is meant to lead to action.

In my experience, vision grows out of a few things. First, it flows from the inspiration from the Holy Spirit. I do not say this just as a nod to religiosity. I truly believe and have experienced the inspiration to dream and vision. Second, vision is rooted in solid research, knowing your community, your audience, the needs, and your captivity to meet those needs. Third, vision is a shared experience. While an initial vision may come from one or two persons, a developed vision is a shared vision. Finally, many people can dream and vision. I have led countless groups through visioning exercises; however, there is a final step to vision, Doing!

James 1:22 states: “But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.” While visioning and planning take a lot of work, it is easier to create a plan than it is to live it out. We can create pages and pages of research and put together lovely pamphlets and multipage booklets that beautifully articulate our vision to engage our community; however, that is only the first step toward transforming lives by living the gospel of Jesus Christ. Putting a vision into action requires faith, commitment, a willingness to risk, and intentionality.

Hillspring has lived out numerous visions over the years. It is a well-practiced congregation in the art of visioning. I look forward to crafting God-led visions into lived realities with the support and engagement of church and community volunteers. The needs are great. The inspiration of the Holy Spirit is limitless. The passion of volunteers is contagious. So, let us change the world! Let us Live a life worthy of our Christian faith. Let us Love with the love of God to all people. Let us Grow in our faith, knowledge, passion, and expression of Christ to the world.
